It seems like we were just at the Yakima SunDome watching the Lynden boys basketball team cut down the nets to celebrate the Lions’ second straight Class 2A state championship.
Lynden’s state title capped off an incredible season for our Whatcom County basketball teams that saw the Lynden Christian boys and girls and the Lynden girls earn state trophies, the Lummi Nation boys and Meridian girls make it to state, and 12 other teams qualify for post-season play.
Yes, it was an amazing year … but have no fear! Another great basketball season is just around the corner.
For those keeping track, basketball starts on Nov. 18 with the first practices for our 24 high school boys and girls teams.
The first games are on Tuesday, Dec. 3, with the Blaine boys and girls at Friday Harbor, the Lynden boys and girls hosting King’s, Bellingham’s boys and girls at cross-town rival Sehome, the Snohomish boys at Ferndale and the Ferndale girls at Snohomish, the Squalicum boys hosting Everett and the Squalicum girls visiting Shorewood, and the Meridian girls heading south to White River.
Most of the other county teams start up the next day, Dec. 4, or later that week. The regular season lasts through the first full week of February, and if you’re planning ahead, here’s the playoff schedule:
* Districts, bi-districts and tri-districts: Feb. 10-22
*Regionals: Feb. 28 and 29
* State tournaments: March 4-7
So mark your calendars, check out your favorite teams’ schedules at our two leagues’ websites — nwcathletics.com and nwbathletics.com — and get ready for another fun season of great Whatcom County basketball.
