In a season filled with outstanding players, Whatcom Hoops ranked the top 30 girls. Each day we featured an amazing player in our county and counted down until we got to #1. We hope you enjoyed the countdown as we honored the best of the best.
#22
Mallory Butenschoen, junior, Ferndale
WHY SHE’S #22: Although listed as a 5-foot-7 guard, Butenschoen was a power forward who played much taller. Finally stepping out from her big sister’s shadow, she tied for the team lead in scoring with sister Madisyn (8.6 points a game) and led the Golden Eagles in rebounding (6 per game) and assists with 49. She was a complete player, collecting 23 steals and shooting 72 percent from the foul line, who brought passion whether on the court or on the bench supporting her teammates.
COACH TERRI YOST: “Mallory showed up every day to compete. We always knew that when a shot went up, Mallory’s opponent was never going to get to the rebound. No matter the size of the opponent, Mallory had them boxed out. Mallory’s inside and outside game is strong, but’s her passion and excitement when something good happens on the court that sets her aside from everyone else.”
